Have questions about the Lab for Developmental Studies?
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Please click here to fill out an information sheet. We will contact you as soon as possible to set up an appointment!
DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IF I SIGN UP?
No! After you submit a sign-up form, we will give you information about studies your child is eligible for. If you are interested, we work with your schedule to make an appointment.
IS MY CHILD THE RIGHT AGE TO PARTICIPATE?
We have studies for kids from 3 months to 14 years. After you fill out a sign-up form (please click above), we will contact you when your child is the correct age for a study!
WHAT TOPICS DO YOU STUDY?
Our lab explores such topics as how infants perceive partly hidden objects, how children learn words for new objects, and how infants and children understand number. You may be surprised by how much babies and young children know!
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT KIDS ARE THINKING?
We use different methodologies based on children's age. For example, in many infant studies we show babies a display and measure how long they watch different events. Babies typically look longer at things that they find new or surprising, so we can make inferences about what they already know and expect from the world. With toddlers and older children, many of the studies are set up as games. We use children’s responses or choices to understand what interests them.
HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL STUDY?
Studies vary in length. Most studies are one session. We will always let you know how long the study is before you agree to participate.
WHAT IF I NEED TO BRING OTHER CHILDREN WITH ME?
Each of our lab spaces has a fun playroom, and we provide babysitters for siblings during appointments. We may even have studies for siblings to participate in during the same visit to our lab!
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?
As a thank you for your participation in our study, your child will receive a small gift and a participation certificate. If you travel to campus, you will receive $5 for your travel expenses.
WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?
Our labs are located within a 5 minute walk of the Harvard Square Red Line stop, and close to several bus lines. We also provide free parking for families who prefer to drive to their appointments. Please click here for more information about our location.
